When President Donald Trump reopened a long-closed conversation about the name of the Washington NFL team, he and others implied that liberal thinking forced the venerable franchise to change its name from Redskins to Commanders in 2022.
Two Native American groups on Monday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to block a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team restores its old and controversial Redskins name.
The Washington Commanders are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. Trump wrote that there is a "big clamoring" for the team to be renamed the "Washington Redskins Football Team." Trump has his own history with the NFL after showing interest in buying a team during the 1980s,
Trump also said Sunday that he wants Cleveland's baseball team to revert to its former name, the Indians, saying there was a “big clamoring for this" as well. The Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians have had their current names since the 2022 seasons and both have said they have no plans to change them back.
"Let me be clear, we're on the 1-yard line and it's time to get over the line," Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said
