LOUISVILLE, Ky. (HawaiiNewsNow/WAVE/AP) - A UPS cargo plane bound for Hawaii crashed and exploded in a massive fireball Tuesday while taking off from the company’s global aviation hub in Louisville, Kentucky, killing at least nine people and injuring 11, authorities said.
The death toll in the crash of a United Parcel Service cargo plane, near Louisville, Kentucky's Muhammed Ali International Airport, has risen to nine.
Officials said flames from the crash ignited a string of fires forcing authorities to halt flight operations through the night.

The UPS plane was headed from Louisville to Honolulu, Hawaii, and is reported to have been carrying approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel at the time of the crash. Sarav Arunachalam, deputy director of the UNC Institute for the Environment, told WRAL News that amount of fuel can pose big risks to nearby residents and responders.
